Where did the Nobel Prize come from?
Alfred Nobel was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1833. He was a scientist and an inventor.
Alfred Nobel became famous for inventing dynamite. Dynamite is an explosive. An explosive is a chemical that explodes or blows up. Nobel thought that dynamite would be useful for construction companies. Dynamite made knocking down old buildings, blasting rock, digging tunnels, and building bridges much easier. Soon, thousands of construction companies around the world wanted to buy dynamite. Nobel became very rich.
Nobel never wanted his invention to be used as a weapon. But it happened anyway. People used his explosives in bombs and other weapons. Nobel felt bad about this. He decided to use the money he made from inventing dynamite for good things.
When Nobel died, he gave all his money to start the Nobel Prizes. These prizes are given every year to people who do good things for the world.
