READING 2 – Shark Therapy
Tanya Streeter was born in 1973 and is a world champion free-diver, but she has one big problem. She’s afraid of sharks! To overcome her fear, she needs help or “therapy” and travels to the Bahamas to get it. Here, she learns how to swim with them and comes face-to-face with a dangerous tiger shark.
She can hold her breath underwater for up to six minutes and has dived to depths of 160 meters (525 feet). It was crucial for her to overcome her fear of sharks as it interfered with her ability to free-dive.
The tiger shark gets its name from the stripes on its side and grows to a length of 3 to 4 meters. They are commonly found in the shallow waters of the Bahamas. The Bahamas is a country consisting of a large group of islands in the Atlantic, off the southeast coast of the U.S. and close to the Caribbean.
